It began as an effort to bridge a significant gap in 2004. 〰️
In 2004, there was a critical lack of both data and skills, particularly in the realm of sustainable technologies. The industry was devoid of advocates and practitioners for essential initiatives such as rainwater harvesting, waste management, and water recycling. Moreover, when urged to adopt sustainable living practices, people were often at a loss for information and guidance. To address this gap, we initiated workshops on sustainability, reaching out to colleges, government organizations, and utilizing print media to spread awareness wherever opportunities arose.
The devastating 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami highlighted the urgent need for systemic change and underscored the vulnerabilities faced by marginalized communities. Witnessing the widespread destruction and human suffering was a turning point for our founder, Ar. Neelam Manjunath. It propelled a shift towards not only advocating for sustainable practices but also actively engaging in on-ground skill development.
In response, the Centre for Green Building Materials and Technology (CGBMT) was established in 2004 as a trust under the Societies Act, under section 12A of the Income Tax Act 1961. This initiative aimed to democratize access to sustainable living practices and integrate sustainable building technologies into the mainstream. Operating alongside Manasaram Architects and supported by Aditi Constructions & Aditigreenscapes, the trust was created to tackle the lack of awareness, trained professionals, and data in the field of sustainable building materials and technologies. Since its inception, CGBMT has championed environmentally friendly solutions, promoting a sustainable way of living through research, advocacy, and capacity building. The organization actively works to ensure these solutions are accessible to all, recognizing the importance of inclusivity and equity in fostering a just and sustainable future for communities at both local and global levels.
CGBMT's work is essential in tackling climate change as it addresses the root causes of environmental degradation through education and the implementation of sustainable technologies. By promoting practices like rainwater harvesting, waste management, and water recycling, CGBMT not only helps reduce the carbon footprint but also fosters resilience in communities, particularly those most vulnerable to climate change impacts. The organization’s focus on capacity building ensures that individuals and institutions are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to adopt sustainable practices, creating a ripple effect of positive environmental change. Furthermore, CGBMT's research and advocacy efforts contribute to shaping policies that prioritize sustainability, thereby playing a crucial role in the global movement towards a sustainable future.
